I was having a discussion on the decline of British manufacturing with a friend yesterday and outside of obviously food/drink products, neither of us could think of anything we have purchased in recent history that said "Made in Britain" on the box. Plenty of things I own are made in China, Japan, USA, Indonesia etc. but I couldn't think of a single thing that was made in UK.

I own a (very tiny) plastic model kit manufacturing business too, and all our kits are made in the UK. We have a really fantastic supply chain for hobby products here, with lots of very experienced and efficient suppliers many of whom are located pretty centrally (in Nottingham often.) You can thank the likes of Games Workshop for that, as many of these companies were GW suppliers in the early days before GW had its own in house facilities, and now these companies supply the smaller brands, including me!

It's worth checking your toiletries. My mouthwash is made in the UK, toothpaste has reasonable odds for being from the UK too.

Plus their refurb service is great. I’ve had two pairs of Rothschild black capped oxfords fro about six years now. Yes they haven’t had much use from mid March 20 to June 21, but I had them refurbed at the start of 2020.
You can probably have the refurbed twice, maybe three times, so there’s about ten years out of a pair of shoes for about ￡500/pair.
That will be cheaper, better for your feet, more sustainable, more stylish and infinitely more comfortable than buying some fashion tat shoes.
Also just had my Church’s Brogues refurbed for the first time so that’s about ￡600 all in though I did buy them in 2013.

Quite a lot of things I buy are British made, our industry is much larger than people usually give it credit for. If you use online shopping and buy the cheapest, chances are it won't be British, but if you look around there are loads of things.
Have a look at these sites to get an idea of all sorts of products such as clothing, umbrellas etc etc etc

Thanks, that's quite informative. I do admit I do usually go for the cheapest product which serves the purpose hence I usually get stuff from China haha.
Maybe in the future when I earn more money, I'll be able to afford UK made things? We'll see.
It is curious though that Japan also is a high wage developed country but they manage to manufacture loads of things? I have a rice cooker, a couple of guitars and a few camera lenses and electronics made in Japan and they weren't that outrageously expensive either.

You can say the same thing about Japanese goods as German goods. Usually these companies have good productivity, innovation and efficient supply chains. What makes something like optical equipments good is technology, not how much cheap labour you can throw at it.
UK’s bigger non-agrifood manufacturing sectors off the top of my head are cars (lots of it Japanese companies), pharmaceuticals, machinery, aerospace stuff and textiles. So apart from clothing items or cars it’s not as visible for normal consumers.

Yes, we tend to make few physical consumer goods but are much better at non consumer goods. JCBs for example. Or aero engines. And, of course, services which we excel at and don't come under the term goods.
